Description:The Environmental Health Division is responsible for improving and protecting the public health, welfare, and environment through inspection programs, educational outreach, and as a last resort, enforcement powers conveyed through the State of Michigan Public Health Code and the Livingston County Sanitary Code.

Under the supervision of the Director of Environmental Health, this position evaluates commercial, residential, and public locations in the County to enforce compliance with Federal, State and Local environmental health laws and regulations in an effort to safeguard the publicís health.

The job duties of this position will include evaluations in the following programs; food service, drinking water, wastewater treatment systems, campgrounds, swimming pools, bathing beaches, indoor air quality, and body art.

The work includes determining compliance with various Michigan Public Health regulations and the Livingston County Sanitary Code; preparing inspection reports that cite violations, documenting deficiencies and making recommendations for improvement; and reviewing written plans related to facility operation, construction design, and facility corrections.

Sanitarians may also conduct investigations of illness outbreaks, or chemical exposures, and they respond to public health nuisances, indoor air violation complaints and public health emergencies.
Duties:Performs site evaluations on public and private property and establishments for compliance with regulations that requires the application of professional environmental health standards and programs and issues permits as appropriate.
Responds to inquiries and complaints from the general public regarding sanitation and environmental health issues including groundwater and surface water pollution, food service protection activities, and related programs.
Reviews construction plans and establishments for compliance with various environmental health programs and standards.
Issues written and verbal orders to correct violations and re-inspects site to ensure proper compliance with various environmental health program laws.
Works with outside agencies and community groups to address environmental health issues.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Qualifications:LICENSING or CERTIFICATIONS: Michigan Registered Sanitarian (RS) or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) with the National Environmental Health Association preferred.
Entry level applicants that do not have RS/REHS credentials must demonstrate eligibility to sit for the National REHS exam.
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
Valid Driver's License and a good driving record.
